Following 30 years as a graphic designer Susan Temple Neumann is living her dream of painting full-time. Her love of painting has opened up many new adventures: from painting en plein air in Paris, France and around the U.S. to meeting other artists and people who share her passion.
Susan is a representational painter in an impressionistic manner. Her goal is to capture the mood and feeling of the landscape and to draw the viewer into the scene and experience it through her eyes. "While painting outdoors time is always a factor so in order to not be "chasing shadows" quick decisions with total focus must be made - 3 hours seem to pass in what feels like minutes. One of the hardest things to achieve in a painting, but something I'm always striving to do, is best explained by artist Robert Henri "Paint the flying spirit of the bird rather than it's feathers."
Visiting museums and studying masters of the past and present are essential to furthering Susan's desire to learn as much about the art of painting and to constantly be trying to make the next painting better than the last. A few of the artists that provide inspiration are Sorolla, Sargent, George Inness, Edgar Payne, Anders Zorn, and Rick Howell.
"As often as possible I paint outdoors which allows me to observe the subtle color nuances that a camera cannot record." Frequent travels have provided rich opportunities for capturing the atmosphere, color, and light in Paris, Madrid, Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas - and just recently California and the Grand Canyon which were both very inspiring. "The mountains are where I'm happiest painting - the grandeur and solitude are like a magnetic draw challenging me to capture their majesty on canvas. It's such a change in scenery from where I live near Dallas that as I'm leaving a painting trip to New Mexico, Colorado or wherever, I'm already planning my next trip back to the mountains."
I feel blessed each day to know it is my "job" to interpret the beauty and magnificence of God's creations as I see it. It's a glorious life!
"Art is when you hear a knocking from your soul - and you answer." Terri Guillemets
