Susan Temple Neumann is living her dream of painting full-time following 30 years as a graphic designer and illustrator. Her love of painting has opened up many new adventures: from painting en plein air in Paris, France and around the U.S. to meeting other artists and people who share her passion.
Susan enjoys a more painterly style of realism which helps keep the oil painting fresh and "alive." Her goal is to capture the mood and feeling of the landscape and to draw the viewer into the scene and experience it through her eyes. "Plein air painting has forced me to hone my skills and make quick decisions when dealing with the rapidly changing light and elements...and those pesky insects. There is no better teacher than direct observation and nature itself."
"As often as possible I paint outdoors which allows me to observe the subtle color nuances that a camera cannot record." Frequent travels have provided rich opportunities for capturing the atmosphere, color, and light in Paris, Madrid, Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, California and Texas. "The mountains are where I'm happiest painting - the grandeur and solitude are like a magnetic draw challenging me to capture their majesty on canvas. Living near Dallas, I try to get away to the mountains as often as I can - for my mountain fix."
Susan is a native Texan, has a fine arts degree (BFA) from UTA and has taken many classes and workshops from some of the top artists working today. Visiting museums and studying masters of the past and present are essential to furthering Susan's desire to learn as much about the art of painting and to constantly be trying to make the next painting better than the last. A few of the artists that provide inspiration are Sorolla, Sargent, George Inness, Edgar Payne, Anders Zorn and the early 20th century Taos Society of Artists.
Susan has had her award winning work juried into many national and international shows and has collectors from across the U.S.
I feel blessed each day to know it is my "job" to interpret the beauty and magnificence of God's creations as I see it. It's a glorious life!
"Art is when you hear a knocking from your soul - and you answer." Terri Guillemets
